(Edit: In early January of 2019, SiIvaGunner’s Youtube channel was terminated by the site. All of the videos within this list have since become unavailable. If one wishes to listen to the accompanying rips, one will have to search Youtube in the hopes an archive exists.)
(Edit #2: The channel came back (circa February 28th). I’m gonna go ahead and leave these edits up here in case it goes down again.)
It’s that time of year. Time to enjoy some high quality rips courtesy of our friendly internet-neighbor, SiIvaGunner.
Please note that, as always with these kinds of lists, this is simply my opinion on the matter and not objective fact. If the world were perfect, I wouldn’t feel the need to put this disclaimer up, but the world isn’t, so remember: I am not God. What I say can (and will) be argued against.
Another point I’d like to make is that with this series of Top 10’s specifically, there are no overlaps or clear indication of what is better than what in terms of past lists. None of the rips included in the 2017 list will be on this one, and that this subject is more just giving a reason to continue to document incredibly high-quality rips, of which are being released to the public like a candy factory. This will be treated like a serious list, but not an all-encompassing one. With that said, this year’s crop:
#10: Machine Passage – Kirby Air Ride
I love Kirby Air Ride. I wish I still had that game. Lots of family fun with that one. Kirby can also lay claim to a consistently good soundtrack throughout the years. This track in particular isn’t really my favorite from the game, but the inclusion of such aggressive rap tracks is a surprisingly agreeable mixture. I particularly like the part where the Gregorian chants come in. An otherwise decent track improved through simply adding layer of something that fits astoundingly well.
#9: X-Naut Fortress – Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Of all the tracks to be listed on this list, this one might be the most stupid. Once again, the subtle genius of SiIvaGunner has interlaced a real-life track into the web of design within video game tracks, and found a beautiful match. I have no idea what this real-life track is, but it really suits the cybernetic beeps and boops of the X-Naut Fortress. It also helps that I really enjoy the track accompanying the X-Naut Fortress.
#8: K.K. Cruisin’ – Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo
I may as well copy-paste the miscellaneous details to each track because they’re basically all going to be the same. This, however, is a slight deviation from the actual K.K. Cruisin’ track and flows more with the smooth rap/hip-hop track asserting its superiority. I don’t know what it is about this channel, but it gets me way more into a genre I typically can’t stand more than anything else. If all rap/hip-hop sounded like this, I’d be game.
#7: Steam Gardens (CD Version) – Super Mario Odyssey
If the other tracks were simple edits, this one is the most minimalist in style.
And it really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really shouldn’t fit as well as it fucking does.
#6: Ultimate Koopa – Super Mario 64
I have never played any Touhou game (I’m pretty sure this is where the joke originates). Despite never playing any, I have found myself identifying with its fast-paced, eccentric soundtrack. Whether SiIvaGunner or Smooth McGroove, there seems to be various Touhou tracks that really speak to me. Is it because I am a weeb? Do weebs seem to gather around a certain subsect of music? Nevertheless, if fighting Bowser consisted of banging my head to this, I’d fight him everyday.
#5: Undertale (OST Version) – Undertale
Undertale’s soundtrack is really good.
Owl City’s Fireflies is a guilty pleasure of mine.
The slow, methodical approach that reeks of emotional splendor and a strangely melancholic tone of self-determination speaks to my inner angsty teenager and optimistic temperament. I adore it.
#4: Battle! (Champion) – Pokémon Crystal
I would recommend actually watching the video for this one. I apologize in advance.
#3: Mute City Ver. 2 – Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Oh my Gooooooooooooooooooooooooood—
For anyone who remembers the 2017 list, remember the Windy Hill rip from Sonic Lost World? This one is a lot like it, except packed with even more memey goodness and E N E R G Y!
Is this even Mute City anymore? Have we crossed the point where it’s become its own entity? Frankly, I don’t care. This is my jam.
#2: Overworld Theme (Unused) – Super Mario World
I don’t even want to comment. Listen to this inexplicably catchy garbage. Just… how?
#1: Ending – Club Penguin
I hate this. I hate this so much.
Why does this exist? Why should we tolerate such horrid exercise of power within our great society? What gave SiIvaGunner the inclination to do something this absolutely batshit when it could be creating harmonious tracks like those listed above. So much effort went into this. So much time, I’m sure. Why? Just why, exactly?
And why do I want to cry as though a major part of my childhood has bid me farewell?
God damn it all.
