NFL Pick ‘Em: Super Bowl LVI

Around this time last year (the extra week to the Regular Season ensured it wouldn’t be exact), I made a Super Bowl pick, as I try to do every year. At that time, I was terribly conflicted: Do I go with the powerhouse Chiefs or the Brady-led Buccaneers? I ended up wrong last year, though I take solace in knowing that my heart wanted to pick the Buccaneers.

This year, my brain and heart are saying the same thing. This year, I’m confident.

A Collection of Anime OPs/EDs I Actually Like (Volume Three)

It’s been quite some time since I’ve done one of these. Was my desire to write another motivated by how few ideas for posts I have at the moment? I’ll let you decide. Regardless, this is the third post I’ve made on the topic of anime OPs/EDs, so you’re welcome to check out my prior two posts on the subject if you’d like to know my tastes going into this one.

And to clarify for anyone new: I skip OPs/EDs 99% of the time when I watch anime. Indeed, I am a dirty skipper. For me, I’m more interested in the content of a series; those three minutes saved by skipping the music adds up in the long run. Even if I didn’t, I also don’t really care for a lot of anime-associated tunes. Finding something I’m actually willing to spend more time on is immensely rare. Maybe that’s why these posts are spread out so far in date…

Ladies and Gentlemen, Merry Days of Anime 2021

This post’s title was, in fact, inspired by the Daniel Craig introducing The Weeknd meme.

When I made up this impromptu block of anime-viewing festivities, I half-wondered if it would end up being a yearly thing. Here we are in year three; I think it’s safe to say that it’s here to stay. Probably helps that I don’t watch much anime nowadays, ensuring that by this point I’m actually willing to indulge for a little while. Join me as I go back to the topic that used to be my blog’s central focus.

Top 10 Favorite Games After Four Years With KeenGamer

I mentioned last year that my productivity in terms of titles reviewed was fairly low. While I cannot remember the exact number, this past year was pretty low, as well—only twenty games. This would imply that the ten games I cover today will make up a clean half of the games I’ve reviewed between September 30th, 2020 and the same day, 2021. Nevertheless, there’s a solid selection of titles I’ve come across that make up the best games I’ve played in year four of my KeenGamer career.

No personal input from me this time around; life’s been relatively good. Work has been steady and I have no major complaints. If there’s been any reason for the lack of games reviewed, it could just be the increased responsibilities I have now that I work for Keen full-time. That said, I’ve already published a Metroid Dread review since the cutoff and will likely have another review out in the coming days. Off to a good start for next year!

Small and maybe unwarranted note, but I don’t receive review copies for everything I review. Also, since I’ve formally reviewed all games in the following list, I won’t go into substantive detail here.

July Will Be a Month Full of Odes to Twitch Streamers

Hello, everyone. A short post today, aimed at further elaborating on what the title already conveys. All throughout the month of July, I will be writing Ode-type posts to Twitch streamers I have since become enamored with and/or believe deserve shouting out.

For those unaware, I have written about my newfound experience with Twitch before, and it has become a comfortable part of my day to listen in to a few streamers daily. Does this end up filling up my day from beginning to end? Generally, yes. Does it get overwhelming? Generally, yes. Nevertheless, many streamers have become important to me, and I felt the desire to showcase my affection through the only means I know I’m moderately good at: writing.

I will be writing a post of varying size every other day in July, starting with July 1st. So July 1st, then 3rd, then 5th, and so forth. Whether or not I do this up until the 31st is currently undetermined, though it’s guaranteed to at least get to the 27th.

And for those who want a slight taste of what these “Ode-type” posts will look like, you can take a look at my latest Ode-type post. (Wow, it’s been nearly two years…)

Thank you all, as always, for your continued support and time. I hope my unfiltered affection manages to make for quality blogging content.

Ranking The Oscars 2021 Best Picture Candidates (+ Some Extras)

Something nice happened this year. Due to the graciousness of a dear friend of mine, I was able to watch every film nominated for Best Picture this year. That marks the first time in this blog’s far-too-long history that I managed to do so, despite my best efforts (being frugal can be limiting). As such, expect a much longer ranking post this year, as I also managed to squeeze in a couple extra films nominated for other awards I’d like to discuss.

Top 10 Highest Quality SiIvaGunner Rips (2021 Edition)

I have decided to bring back commentary this year. That’s what you all come here for, right?

SiIvaGunner is a parody account of noteworthy video game track uploader GilvaSunner. Multiple times a day (in infrequent periods), they will upload tracks that take the entirety or a portion of a (usually) game soundtrack and edit it in a way that makes it a joke. Should you need any examples, feel free to look at my 201720182019, and 2020 lists. What will be making my list will be the “highest quality” tracks, those that I can listen to unironically as music that makes me swoon, joke or not.

Please note by the big parentheses in the title of this post that this is an annual thing that occurs on this blog that shouldn’t be construed as a be-all, end-all list of the best rips to ever grace SiIvaGunner. This is just my own opinion, and if you disagree, you should make your own list, credit me with inspiring you, and tell me I’m wrong.

Replaying 16 Hours of Pokémon SoulSilver Just Made Me Want to Replay Pokémon Silver

“Modern” (relative term) Pokémon games and I have a bit of a rocky history. Raised and conscious in the era of Pokémania, I’ve been raised into an expectation of what a Pokémon game is and how it should play. Scrumptious RPG elements combined with catching and raising a variety of creatures used for battle and, eventually, other activities.

In the years since I became a teenager and eventually an adult, Pokémon has constantly evolved (ha) into something more and more aimed at accessibility than anything else, which I’m not totally fond of. Such disdain spurs me to continuously replay older games to suit my preferences, lonely and tedious as that has become.

Recently, I’ve begun replaying various Pokémon games in order to ascertain their quality given my current mindset, which is more tolerant of the inevitability of change. Of late, I’ve found that Pokémon Platinum is pretty great (still need to finish it to be sure) and Pokémons FireRed/LeafGreen are not as great as I once believed them to be. The latest of my revisit tour comes in the form of Pokémon SoulSilver/HeartGold, which many consider the definitive version of Pokémon‘s second generation. Do I agree? Well, the article title gives a hint, but first, some history:

Current Super Bowl Pick ‘Em Record: 4-5

This overweight, overzealous-about-football fool was so preoccupied with other things that he forgot to make a Pick ‘Em post last year. Therefore, all of you will have to take my word for it when I say that I did pick the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the San Francisco 49ers last year. Then again, readers had to take my word for it when I say I had, like, a 1-3 record prior to when I started making Pick ‘Em posts… When did I start making Pick ‘Em posts? Regardless, it was pretty bad, but it’s been getting better recently.
