Has this ever happened to you? Starting off that anime ride, you end up devouring at lightning speed, racking up your total anime-viewed count like it’s a drug addiction. Eventually, you start getting a big head, so you rate all of them and start ranking them in a notebook based on enjoyment and objectivity. Then years go by and that notebook is long abandoned. You don’t have the appetite you used to, and all those impactful titles that you used to hold dear are but vague images, dancing in your subconscious. Awful, isn’t it? Old Games Are Fast, New Games Are Slow | One of Many Personal Predicaments

It’s been some time since I’ve done one of these “personal predicament” posts. Typically, these are things that I experience in my day-to-day life revolving things that interest me, that which confounds me or seem interesting enough to think upon. The “art” of critique and critical thinking is something that floods my mind often, and recently, Animal Crossing has been the primary subject. This will not be a full-on review of New Horizons (though I do have one), nor will it be a dissertation on why the original game is so much better. This will cover something I’ve felt a common occurrence in games from then and now, which has affected the way I approach and appreciate titles: speed.

A Farewell Ode to Excalibur: World of Warcraft Burning Crusade Private Server

In November of 2015, I made a discovery that would revert my adult form back to its glorious teenage years. You didn’t have to pay to play World of Warcraft, assuming you didn’t mind playing earlier builds of it. Private servers have always been pretty common, and yet it took me years after quitting retail to realize the possibility of going back to the game that I preferred. After some searching, I stumbled upon Excalibur, a private server that had been running for over five years at the time, had a decent population, and promised a near-Blizz-like coding script. It ended up being the right decision, as while my interest in it waned as time passed by, I would never leave it for good. I elaborated my thoughts in an early 2016 post. Fire Emblem: Awakening, Pokémon LeafGreen, and the Unfortunate Consequence of Playing Better Games

In major parts of November and December, I played through and thoroughly enjoyed Pokémon Platinum, which was particularly surprising considering I didn’t think I liked the fourth generation of Pokémon. Upon its release roughly seven months ago, Fire Emblem: Three Houses destroyed my social life and ended up being my 2019 GOTY. Both would have a profound impact on my experience playing games from their respective franchises that came before: Fire Emblem: Awakening and Pokémon LeafGreen, both of which I had previously completed and enjoyed. Frustration in Video Games Is Just Part of the Adventure

I cannot recall if I’ve ever described this phenomenon I have with the more trepidatious moments of a video game’s whole. The #1 Thing That Will Get Your Indie Game Noticed (From a Professional Game Critic)

There are a few things I should note to not give incoming viewers who may benefit from this article the impression that I know everything:

  1. I am a professional video game critic by definition, though with little notoriety. I am paid to write video game reviews, but I am not from IGN, Game Informer, or any other big-name company. These tips will be from my own personal experience.
  2. I note indie games specifically as they are among the ones I find myself more enamored with. And I’m more likely to acquire them, but that’s not noteworthy.
  3. I work for a site called KeenGamer, which has employed me for nearly two years. In that span, I have written over fifty reviews and close to seventy total articles. I won’t pretend that that makes me immensely knowledgeable, though I am experienced, nonetheless.
