Entry #14: Criminale! (SoM 2018)

This is a cautionary tale when it comes to the thing I most desire with great executions of really stupid concepts. Take Miman Renai, one of my favorite manga only for the sake of its expressive and overly-optimistic tone. It was a really stupid and potentially problematic story between a near-thirty gal game producer and a naively pure middle school girl. What it managed to create was an atmosphere that made it obvious from the start that it was stupid and shouldn’t be taken too seriously (though also struggled with maintaining it; more on this soon). Reality kicked in, which was better suited for a tale involved in reality, whereas Criminale! is so absurdly stupid in both setting and the reality it presents that I cannot for the life of me think of why it decided to ever take itself seriously. The final battle arrives, a boss that has taken down likely hundreds of stories that start off as something zany and fun: The “S” word. Seriousness. Continue reading “Entry #14: Criminale! Entry #10: Sore wa Totsuzen, Unmei no Aite ga (SoM 2018)

Ecch-i. It is the stuff of legends. It produces hordes of fans all across the land for a single purpose: sexual stimulation. Boy, do I LOVE unwarranted, random sexual stimulation with no payoff. Y’know what I like better than that? A setting that invites it without doing anything to the cultural norms which stigmatize the activity. Boy, do I LOVE teenagers who are too scared of sex to actually have sex, instead of behaving like teenagers and having sex. Entry #9: Koukoku no Shugosha (SoM 2018)

I really wasn’t fond of this manga early on. My feelings were in murky conflict as I fought to diversify my Summer with different sorts of genres and tones, instead of endlessly indulging in cute/stupid romances. There are times when I try to charge forward in spite of my disinterest, thinking it will do me good. In this case, the opening chapters did little to bring me out of my funk.
