Last night as I was toiling away at work, a certain track invaded my headspace. I realize the audience for this specific post is tremendously low, but this is something of a journey that I’m quite pleased with. After watching Jon Bois and Kofie Yeboah destroy the NBA with horrible players, I was inspired to do something similar, but without the intentional sabotage. Playing Madden 12 for as long as I have, it finally clicked upon watching the aforementioned video: I like playing football, but I love creating football. I love assembling the teams, creating the scenarios, and doing all I can to improve every position. Think of it like those auto-chess games, where you establish the setting and plan for what’s ahead, then let the AI handle all else. I did just that, only with Madden 12. Unfortunately, I cannot share the same enthusiasm I had for last year’s list in my current mindset. Seeing as I’m still in an unintended semi-hiatus from the blog and the continued pressure of landing an actual full-time job that doesn’t make me want to end myself to secure a proper place in society looming, I don’t feel as chipper these days. Everyone, this game has exceeded all expectations of mine. Fire Emblem: Three Houses has, at this point, consumed 250+ hours of my life since receiving the game a few days after release. Notice how my blog’s been pretty quiet since late July? Yeah. You all have no idea how much I held back, too. For the sake of not oversaturating the marketplace, I refrained from making a hundred posts on this game—I certainly could have (and still can). A “totally 100% final thoughts on three houses” post has been in the planning stages for The Visualist’s Veranda for weeks, but never came to fruition because, well, my thoughts on the game keep changing!
But this? This is

90 hours. That is the amount of time I have spent on Fire Emblem: Three Houses since receiving it on July 30th. Mathematically, this would mean I have averaged (not including today) 8.2 hours per day dedicated to playing this game. It would not be hyperbole to say that this title has destroyed my motivation to indulge in other interests. Three Houses has become something of a very special experience to me, every aspect considered. What better way to come back from a near-month-long (not planned) hiatus from the Visualist’s Veranda than with a post dedicated to highlighting my thoughts on a game that has thrown me completely off my typical routine. People are crying. They were once overjoyed, blissful of the state of the upcoming Pokémon games, which would grace the Nintendo Switch for the first time in the series’s (mainline) history. Their expectations and hopes were shattered upon the announcement that they wouldn’t be able to transfer all of their pokémon from the upcoming Pokémon Home into Sword & Shield. The reason? The Galar region will not support a national dex, code for “Only a fraction of the total number of pokémon will be available in Sword & Shield.”
The outcry has been substantial. Thousands of Pokémon fans are swearing off their loyalty from the company and the upcoming game. The hashtag “#BringBackNationalDex” has become a symbol of their contempt, a unifying plea for the Pokémon Company to answer. Fans are now hostile, suspicious, and cynical of every detail on the once-beloved upcoming titles. They wish for every pokémon, not just “some.” After all, it’s about catching them all.

There’s something about the spirit of a really good indie game that makes me enjoy the video game medium even more, particularly seeing first-hand the passion and commitment needed to make something so time-consuming and daunting.
